Overview
When the COVID-19 pandemic happened in 2020, the significance and purpose of the Health team at Facebook shifted from being a small incubation team to the company priority. The team grew 4x and moved 80% of effort to combat COVID-19 mis- and dis-information.
However, once the Pandemic shifted to Endemic stages, the team reallocated resources. I had the privilege of taking a deep dive into our existing team purpose and thinking about it in terms of COVID-19 and the way the Health Team has changed beyond what it used to be. At the end, I lead the team in crafting a more inclusive, forward-thinking team purpose statement and revised 3-year vision.
Revised Purpose statement
Bringing people and organizations together to create a healthier world
While the original purpose statement wasn’t far off …
It lacked inclusivity of people who’s disorders or health conditions could not be improved. Furthermore, while the status of someone’s health could be improved, the improvement of health as a collective doesn’t make a lot of sense. I brought these issues to light with a series of slides to breakdown my thinking around the statement itself. As a result, the team worked together quickly to think of the new purpose statement changing the second clause from “… to improve health” to “create a healthier world.”
New 3-year vision statement
1. Empowering people: Every person has access to the best online support and resources to improve health – their own, and that of their communities.
2. Enabling health professionals: Clinicians and public health professionals are empowered by the best online tools and data to support each other and the people and communities they serve.
3. Advancing global public health: Meta technologies and programs meaningfully improve individual and population health.
In the same fashion, the 10-person leadership team expressed perspectives, opinions, and options for creating a 3-year vision statement that turned out to be:
